What is Mino Washi paper?

Mino washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper that has been continuously produced for over 1,300 years in the Mino region (Gifu Prefecture).

Thanks to its exceptional quality and beauty, it was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

It is characterized by an extraordinary combination of lightness and strength. Although thin and delicate, it remains exceptionally durable – this is the result of using natural materials and the masterful skills of artisans.

Paper created in harmony with nature

Mino washi is primarily made from the fibers of the kouzo (paper mulberry) plant. Thanks to its clean water and favorable natural environment, the Mino region has been an ideal place for paper production for centuries.

The manufacturing process relies on natural ingredients and uses almost no chemicals. As a result, this paper perfectly aligns with contemporary ecological values and sustainable production.

Each sheet of Mino washi paper is handmade by experienced craftsmen. The nagashi-zuki technique allows the fibers to be evenly distributed, creating paper that is both flexible and durable.

In the past, washi paper was mainly used in calligraphy or for the production of shoji (traditional Japanese doors).
